Choosing a clinic abroad: the questions to ask

Search for 'IVF abroad' and you will find dozens of providers with glossy websites and big promises. How do you tell solid care from clever marketing? Ask these questions — of every provider, including us.

Ask about the hospital, not just the clinic

Is the treatment location an accredited hospital (for example JCI) or a stand-alone clinic? Who performs the treatment, and what happens if a complication occurs? An IVF department inside a full hospital means anaesthesia, emergency care and specialists are under the same roof.

Ask for all prices upfront, in writing

An honest provider publishes its full rates and lists them in advance — including medication, techniques and accommodation. Beware of teaser prices with 'necessary extras' added on site. Ask explicitly: what does the total journey cost in the worst case?

Ask who you will talk to — before, during and after

Do you speak to the same person each time, or a rotating call centre? In which language? Who is reachable in the evening or at the weekend, and who calls you after the result — including when it is bad? Guidance is not a side issue: it is the difference between a medical procedure and a journey you can bear.

Ask how treatment decisions are made

Does everyone get the same package, or is the plan drawn up based on your file? Who reviews your data, and are you told why a technique is or is not used? Distrust providers who sell expensive add-ons to everyone — and also providers who never say 'no'. For comparison, read how we do it on How we treat.

Ask about the legal framework

Within which legal framework does the clinic operate? What happens to your embryos, who is legally the parent, and what about donation? Countries differ fundamentally here — read our overview of ethics, culture and the law in Turkey. Make sure the answers fit your values before you book.

And finally: read real stories

Stars and scores are easy to fabricate; full, unedited patient stories with names and dates are not. Ask every provider for contact with previous patients, or read stories like those of our couples — including the journeys that did not succeed. A provider willing to show those stories too has nothing to hide.
