AOA — Artificial Oocyte Activation

Was fertilisation unexplainably low in previous attempts? Artificial oocyte activation (AOA) may offer a solution. Free of charge at Human First.

What is oocyte activation?

Oocyte is the scientific term for egg cell. When a sperm cell enters the egg, 'oocyte activation' normally occurs: a cascade of calcium signals that actually triggers fertilisation. If that activation doesn't happen, fertilisation doesn't take place — even if the sperm cell was inserted perfectly via ICSI.

How does AOA work?

With AOA, the eggs are placed in a solution containing calcium ionophore for 15 minutes directly after the ICSI injection. This substance artificially triggers the natural calcium cascade, allowing fertilisation to start after all.

Who is AOA interesting for?

  • Couples whose fertilisation rate was very low or completely absent in previous IVF/ICSI attempts
  • Situations where an activation problem of the egg or sperm cell is suspected

Cost

There are no extra costs for AOA at Human First. The laboratory applies the technique when there's a medical reason to do so.

Frequently asked questions about AOA

Is AOA safe?

AOA has been used internationally for years for couples with fertilisation problems. Research shows no increased risk for children born from it; the medical team only applies the technique when there's a clear indication.

How do I know if AOA is worthwhile for us?

The main indicator is an unexplained low fertilisation rate in previous attempts. Send us your file — the IVF team will assess whether AOA belongs in your treatment plan.
